Six competitive games, with the entry cost written down

Team shooters, arena games and long-running looters — all free to start. We record how long each one takes to become playable, how it treats newcomers, and what it expects from you before it gets good.

Pick by how much time you actually have

These games are not interchangeable. The most useful thing we can tell you is which category you are walking into before you install anything.

~20 min / session

Drop in, drop out

Matches finish quickly and nothing is lost by stopping. Best for evenings where you do not know how long you have.

~45 min / session

Set aside an evening

Matches run long enough that leaving early hurts your team. Plan the session before you queue.

Weeks of progression

A long-term project

Built around seasons and gear progression. Rewarding, but it expects to be part of your routine.

The current roster

All six titles below. Each rating is out of five and reflects a free account with nothing purchased.

Dota 24.5

Dota 2

The deepest game on this list and the hardest to start. Every hero is free from the beginning, which is rare and genuinely matters.

VALORANT4.6

VALORANT

Precise tactical shooting with character abilities layered on top. Rounds are short and every mistake is legible, which makes improving straightforward.

League of Legends4.4

League of Legends

Enormous roster, constant balance work and a well-built tutorial path. Games run around half an hour and expect you to stay for all of it.

MOBAPCRanked

Team Fortress 24.3

Team Fortress 2

Old, generous and still one of the most readable class shooters made. Community servers are where the interesting play happens.

SMITE4.1

SMITE

A third-person take on the arena genre, which changes the feel entirely. Aiming matters, and the camera makes fights easier to read than in top-down rivals.

Destiny 24.2

Destiny 2

Superb shooting attached to a complicated structure. The free content is substantial; working out what is and is not included is the hard part.

How each entry gets tested

[step 01]

Fresh account, nothing bought

Testing starts from zero every time. If a game hides something important behind a purchase, we want to hit that wall the same way a new player would.

[step 02]

Twenty hours minimum

Competitive games only show their shape once matchmaking has placed you correctly, which takes longer than most reviews allow for.

[step 03]

Peak and off-peak queues

We record queue times at different hours. A game that takes eight minutes to find a match on a weeknight is a different product from the one reviewers see at launch.

[step 04]

Re-checked each season

Live games change. Entries are revisited after major patches and ratings are corrected rather than left standing.
